What To Do On A Rainy Day in Cornwall

Cornwall, with its rugged coastline, little fishing villages and picturesque landscapes, makes it a dream destination for many. However, even in the place we call paradise, rain is a frequent occurrence. But fear not! There is still plenty of fun things to do with the family whilst on holiday here at Hendra, even when the weather is not in our favour.

Picture this: you wake up to the sound of rain tapping gently against the window of your caravan, and you peek outside to see grey clouds hovering above. While some might see this as a day to stay indoors, for adventurers and explorers, rainy days in Cornwall are an invitation to uncover hidden gems and embrace the charm of this beautiful corner of England.

1. Explore Indoor Attractions

Hide away from the rain! Bodmin Jail is the perfect place to immerse yourself into the history of the haunted. Take yourselves on a self-guided tour and discover the history of the jail or join the ‘ghost walk’ experience. This will certainly get your heart racing as it leads you through the eerie prison cells whilst getting an insight on the other-worldly residents that may live here. Listen to stories of mining, smuggling and infamous prisoners while learning about the gruesome truths of being behind bars. This is suitable for older children as it can be spooky!

2. Enjoy Henry’s Playloft

Let the kids loose in Henry’s Playloft! Opening from 9:15am and FREE with your membership passes if you are staying on site with us, otherwise a small charge applies. Our soft play area is suitable for children up to 10 years. There is a seating area for the Mums & Dads, and carers, to relax, or enjoy our colouring in designed just for you! We also have free wi-fi and refreshments available to purchase to keep energy levels up.

3. Take a Foodie Adventure!

Use a rainy day as an opportunity to explore local markets, artisanal bakeries and cosy pubs. Go and try some classic Cornish dishes from fresh seafood to a traditional cream tea. There is a wide variety of eateries in Newquay. Find a little tearoom, order a pot of tea, and a warm scone topped with jam (first!) and clotted cream. You just can’t go wrong!

Or head to the shop, grab a few ingredients and a recipe, and see what you can cook up with the family! Don’t forget to try a Cornish pasty before you leave… but watch those seagulls!

4. Visit the Lobster Hatchery

Get up close with the lobsters! From babies to giants, they’ve got an array of wonderful coastal creatures. The National Lobster Hatchery is a marine conservation, research and education charity and homes an award-winning visitor centre for you and all the family to enjoy. Located in the picturesque town of Padstow, this unique experience is one that you will never forget!

5. Go Further Afield!

Falmouth is a great option for a fun-filled day out for everyone! From exploring the historic Pendennis Castle, one of Henry VIII’s finest seaside fortresses, to taking a gentle stroll through the high street where you will find unique, independent shops and eateries – we’re confident that you will love it here! If you are eager to learn about the history and culture of the sea, then head over to the National Maritime Museum located at the harbourside and shelter from the rain.

6. Coastal Walks with a Twist

While the rain may deter traditional coastal walks, don’t let it stop you from experiencing Cornwall’s stunning coastline. Embrace the weather by layering up with warm and waterproof gear and taking a rainy coastal adventure. The dramatic cliffs, crashing waves, and intense atmosphere can create a unique and memorable experience for many!

Cornwall’s rainy days need not to be a hindrance to enjoying this beautiful county. With a plethora of indoor attractions, delicious eateries, and unique experiences, you can turn a rainy day into an opportunity for exploration and discovery. So, pack your raincoat, embrace the weather, and make the most of your time in Cornwall, rain or shine!
